Winter changes how we use electricity at home. Heaters, electric blankets, kettles and inverter ACs in heat mode all draw a lot of power, often at the same time and often through extension boards that were never meant to carry that load. Every winter, house fires in Pakistan are linked to overloaded sockets, damaged wires and heaters placed too close to curtains or bedding.

Most of these accidents are preventable. Here are the electrical safety checks every home in Islamabad and Rawalpindi should do before the cold really sets in.

1. Do not overload extension boards

An extension board has a limit, and so does the socket it is plugged into. Plugging a heater, a kettle and an iron into one board can push it far beyond what it can safely carry. The first signs are a board or plug that feels warm, a burning smell, or discoloured plastic around the pins.

Plug high-power appliances such as heaters and irons directly into a wall socket rather than an extension board wherever possible, and never connect one extension board to another.

2. Check heater cables and plugs

Heaters that have been stored in a cupboard since last winter may have damaged cables. Before using one, check the full length of the cable for cuts, cracks or exposed wire, and check that the plug is firm and not cracked or scorched. A damaged cable should be replaced, not covered with tape.

3. Keep heaters away from anything that can burn

Electric heaters should stand on a flat, stable surface with clear space all around them. Keep them well away from curtains, bedding, sofas and clothes, never use them to dry laundry, and switch them off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Keep children and pets at a safe distance from heaters with exposed elements.

4. Watch for warning signs in your wiring

Your home’s wiring will often tell you when something is wrong. Call an electrician if you notice any of the following:

  • A breaker that trips again and again when heaters are on.
  • Switches or sockets that feel warm, crackle, or show black marks.
  • Lights that flicker or dim when a heater or AC turns on.
  • A burning or melting plastic smell with no obvious source.
  • A mild shock from an appliance, a tap or a metal fitting.

Never keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping. It is doing its job by warning you that a circuit is overloaded or faulty.

5. Make sure your earthing works

Earthing protects you from electric shock if a fault occurs in an appliance. In many older homes, earthing is missing, broken or has been bypassed. If you have ever felt a tingle from a washing machine, geyser or metal tap, have the earthing checked by an electrician as soon as possible.

6. Be careful with UPS and inverter connections

Many homes rely on a UPS during load shedding. Badly done UPS wiring, undersized wires and loose battery connections can overheat. Batteries should be kept in a ventilated place, away from anything flammable, and the connections should be done by a qualified electrician.

7. Keep water and electricity apart

Winter means more hot water, steam and wet floors in kitchens and bathrooms. Do not use heaters or extension boards in bathrooms, keep electrical appliances away from sinks, and never touch switches or plugs with wet hands.

When to call an electrician

Checking cables, plugs and how you use extension boards is something you can do yourself. Anything involving the distribution board, breakers, earthing, wiring inside walls or UPS connections should be handled by a trained electrician.

If anything on this list sounds familiar, book a verified electrician from Apni Chhat anywhere in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. If you heat your home with an AC, see our guide on getting your inverter AC ready for winter.

Older sectors need this check more than most

The distribution boards in older Islamabad sectors such as F-10 were specified long before a house ran three or four air conditioners, which is why breakers trip on hot afternoons there. In Satellite Town the issue is usually decades of added points and buried junction boxes rather than the original wiring. In houses split into rented portions, as in much of E-11, a second household often runs off circuits that were never sized for it. We work across Islamabad and Rawalpindi and will test the load before suggesting anything.
