A washing machine rarely fails without warning. There is a rattle for a week, or a cycle that runs longer than it used to, and then one morning the drum is full of water and the clothes are soaked. Most of what follows is repairable, and a fair share of it is repairable without buying a single part.
This guide covers the nine faults we see most often in homes across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, what usually causes each one, and what the repair normally costs. Our published washing machine repair range is Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000, and the exact figure is agreed with you in writing before anyone opens the machine.
Before you call: three checks that take two minutes
- Power and door. Machines refuse to start when the door is not fully latched. Press it until you hear the click, then try again.
- The tap and inlet hose. If the tap behind the machine is half closed or the hose is kinked, the machine fills slowly or throws a fill error.
- The pump filter. It sits behind a small flap at the bottom front. Put a towel down, open it, and clear what comes out. A choked filter causes more call-outs than any other single part.
If the machine works after any of those, you have saved yourself a repair bill. If not, the sections below will tell you roughly what you are dealing with before anyone quotes you a number.
1. It fills but will not drain
Water sits in the drum at the end of the cycle, and the clothes come out heavy. In most cases this is the pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a drain pump that has stopped turning. Clear the filter first. If it drains after that, the fault is solved. If the pump hums but no water moves, the impeller is jammed or the pump has failed, and that is a part replacement.
2. Water on the floor
A leak that appears only during a wash is usually the door seal, the inlet hose connection, or a split in the drain hose. A leak that appears while the machine is simply standing there is almost always the tap or the inlet connection. Before you call anyone, close the tap, dry the floor, and run a short cycle so you can tell the technician exactly when the water appears. That one detail saves a lot of time.
3. The drum will not spin
If the drum turns slowly or not at all on spin, the usual causes are a worn drive belt, a load that is unbalanced, or carbon brushes worn down on an older motor. Some machines will also refuse to spin if they cannot drain first, so rule out fault number one before assuming the motor is gone.
4. It will not start at all
No lights, no sound, nothing. Try a different socket before anything else, because a dead socket looks exactly like a dead machine. If other appliances work on that socket, the fault is the door latch switch, the power board, or the mains filter. A door latch is an inexpensive part and a common culprit, so ask for it to be tested before a board is replaced.
5. The door will not open
Most front loaders lock the door for a minute or two after a cycle and will not release it while water is still inside. Drain the machine through the filter flap, wait two minutes, and try again. If the door is still locked after that, the latch assembly has failed and needs replacing. Do not force it: a broken handle turns a small job into a bigger one.
6. Loud banging on the spin cycle
A machine that walks across the floor or bangs hard on spin is either unbalanced or sitting on uneven feet. Level the feet first and make sure the transit bolts were removed when it was installed, because a surprising number of machines in new houses are still running with them in. If the noise is a deep grinding rather than a bang, the drum bearings are going, and on older machines that is the repair where replacement starts to make financial sense.
7. Clothes come out still dirty or smelling
This is rarely a fault at all. Hard water in parts of Rawalpindi leaves scale on the heating element, detergent builds up in the drawer, and the rubber seal collects grime. Run an empty hot cycle with a descaler, pull the drawer right out and wash it, and wipe under the seal. If the water is not heating at all, the element has failed and that is a straightforward part replacement.
8. An error code on the panel
Error codes are useful. Photograph the panel and send the photo along with the brand and model number. Most codes point at a specific circuit, which means the technician can bring the likely part with him rather than making two visits. Fill errors point at the tap and inlet valve, drain errors at the pump and filter, and heating errors at the element or its sensor.
9. The machine trips the breaker
If the machine trips your breaker or RCD, stop using it. The usual cause is a failed heating element or water reaching a connection it should not. This is the one fault on the list where you should not experiment. It needs an electrical check as much as an appliance repair, and we will often look at the socket and circuit at the same time. Our electrician service in Islamabad and Rawalpindi covers that side of it.
What washing machine repair costs in Islamabad and Rawalpindi
We publish our rates rather than quoting on the doorstep. Washing machine repair runs Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 depending on the fault and the part. For comparison, a fridge service is Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500, a microwave repair Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000, and an electric iron Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. The full list sits on our appliance repair page.
Two things are worth knowing. First, the price is agreed before work starts, not after. Second, workmanship carries a 30-day warranty, so if the same fault returns you are not paying twice for it.
Repair or replace?
A rough rule: if the repair costs more than a third of what a comparable new machine costs, and the machine is past eight years old, replacement is usually the better decision. Drum bearings and a failed main board on an older machine are the two repairs that most often push past that line. Everything else on this list, filters, pumps, seals, belts, elements and latches, is normally worth fixing.

Common questions
Do you charge a visit fee if I decide not to repair?
You get a price range in writing before anyone travels to you, so there are no surprises either way. If the quoted range changes once the machine is opened, you are told before any work continues.
Can you repair automatic and semi-automatic machines?
Yes, both, along with top loaders and front loaders from the common brands sold in Pakistan.
How long does a repair take?
Most faults on this list are done in one visit of 45 to 90 minutes. Bearings and board replacements can need a second visit if the part has to be sourced.
Get a price before anyone comes
Send one photo of the machine, the panel and the error code if there is one, on WhatsApp at +92 329 6712923. You get a price range back in writing before anyone travels to you. If it turns out the problem is the drain rather than the machine, our plumbing team handles that instead, and you are told so rather than sold a repair you do not need.
